Turkish President: The US sanctions against Turkey have been somewhat eased.
Jin10 Data, May 17 - With the new U.S. government taking office, relations among NATO allies are gradually warming. Turkish President Erdoğan hopes Washington can ease defense sanctions against Turkey. Erdoğan stated, "We can be pleased to say that the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) has seen some easing." Turkey's purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defense system led to a years-long deadlock with Washington. The U.S. imposed CAATSA sanctions on Turkey, targeting its defense industry, and removed it from the Pentagon's F-35 fighter jet development program. Erdoğan has been seeking a meeting with Trump to reshape their strained relationship. In a phone call on May 5, he invited Trump to visit, promising to take measures to strengthen cooperation with the U.S. This week, the U.S. approved the sale of $304 million worth of missiles to Turkey, signaling a thaw in relations between the two countries.
