ZKM enters the BTC L2 Entangled Rollup and zkVM arena with innovative technology leading the competition.
The competition in the BTC L2 track is becoming increasingly fierce, and ZKM joins the race with innovative technology.
As ZKM enters the BTC L2 space, the competition in this sector is becoming increasingly fierce. Similar to the Ethereum L2 ecosystem, the ultimate market landscape for BTC L2 will depend on the evolution of technology and the market.
The core technology of ZKM is zkVM, and its long-term goal is to enable more projects and ecosystems to adopt this technology, thereby becoming underlying infrastructure. This could achieve the interconnection of assets across different networks, such as Ethereum, BTC, and Cosmos, enhancing overall liquidity. This macro strategy helps to understand ZKM's motivation for entering the BTC L2 track.
On a technical level, ZKM primarily relies on two major innovations: the Entangled Rollup architecture and zkVM. These two technologies aim to address two key issues in the market: asset security and network sustainability.
In view of the high market attention to cross-chain security, ZKM has proposed the "Entangled Rollup Network" mechanism. This mechanism utilizes recursive zero-knowledge proof technology to synchronize the states between different blockchains, avoiding the potential risks of traditional bridging mechanisms when assets are transferred across chains. This framework has previously been implemented on Ethereum, and now ZKM is working to apply it to the Bitcoin ecosystem, making corresponding adjustments based on the characteristics of BTC L1.
ZKM has introduced the OCP (Optimistic Challenge Process) mechanism, which can be seen as a variant of Ethereum L2 optimistic proofs on BTC L2. When users deposit assets into L2, these assets are locked in a pre-signed multi-signature script. After a specified challenge period, the signers can pre-send the assets to the target user while initiating the challenge phase. This mechanism is designed to provide security for off-chain computation, ensuring that L2 transactions can be safely included in a decentralized ordering network.
zkVM has always been one of the important research directions in the field of cryptography. The main difference between ZKM's zkVM and other implementations (such as RISC and SP1) is its native support for Golang. This allows Golang developers to directly use the standard Golang compiler to compile code into MIPS instructions and then utilize ZKM's proof network for verification. In the future, ZKM also plans to support the Rust language.
In addition to technological innovation, ZKM also focuses on the sustainability of its L2 network. To this end, they have introduced the concept of decentralized sorters, where participating nodes can receive rewards based on their contributions. ZKM plans to allocate 40% of the token rewards to all parties involved in mining, including sorter nodes, liquidity staking, and proof network mining. This means that sorter nodes can not only earn gas fees from L2 transactions but also gain additional income from mining.
Currently, the exploration of the BTC L2 field is still ongoing, including both native L2 solutions and EVM-compatible L2 solutions. Native L2 primarily focuses on the development of internal ecosystems, attracting a group of loyal users. On the other hand, EVM-compatible L2 is not only dedicated to expanding the Bitcoin ecosystem but also provides new possibilities for the integration of multiple ecosystems.
