LATEST NEWS: It is claimed that the U.S. Government has far fewer Bitcoin than expected! If true, it's significant!
The U.S. Marshals Service, part of the U.S. Department of Justice, stated in its official response dated July 15, 2025, that the government currently holds only 28,988 Bitcoin.
This figure indicates a significant drop compared to the approximately 200,000 BTC previously estimated in the public domain. At current prices, the value of this amount is around 3.44 billion dollars.
FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) documents shared in response to the information request made on March 24, 2025, contain a detailed account of the government's Bitcoin assets. USMS stated that the information included in these documents was compiled under "AFD (Asset Forfeiture Division / Asset Forfeiture Unit)." The agency also emphasized that some pages of the information notes were shared with partial censorship.
USMS is assumed to have this list current and accurate as long as no official sale announcement is made, since it regularly sells its digital assets through public auctions.
The Bitcoin reserves of the US government have fluctuated over the years due to seizures from major cases such as the Silk Road operations. However, according to the latest alleged data, a significant portion of these assets has been liquidated.
